Dr. Lisa M. Chassy's Dublin Run

A Special Message From Dr. Chassy
As you already know, a year ago this past weekend, I started training for my first marathon with Team in Training. I enjoyed it so much, I ran another just for me and it just wasn't the same without someone depending on me. I said at the finish line I wouldn't run any more, but within days I saw this campaign. I spent some time debating if I would do it or not, but ultimately this cause is one I have to support. So now I'm raising money again, but this time I have gone to the Dogs. And Cats. I appreciate the support everyone gave me in my first run. I couldn't have done it without your encouragement. I know this is an important cause and I know pets who have benefited from this organization's help. For more information on the Brown Dog Foundation, go to the link below,

To make a donation, you are welcome to send a check to me and I will get it submitted in your name. Or, use PayPal via the link below.

Any and all donations help me reach my goal!
PS if you know any other businesses/companies who might be interested in being corporate sponsors, let me know or pass along my email to them. I'm supposed to raise $2K by August 1st and the rest by October 1st.

Training Notes: I ran Nike Women's Marathon in October, 2008 in 4 hours, 55 minutes. It was a
great experience, and a good way to get started on this sport. Lot of support from the team, and
from others affected by leukemia in their families. Next, I ran Knoxville's Marathon, mainly because
it is home. But boy was the cold, windy weather a brute. I finished but in 5:18. I said I wouldn't run
another, but found myself researching options the next day. I guess that means I am addicted.
Today is July 4th, and I am proud of where my running is. I ran 12.2 miles in 2 hours and 1
minute. This is 6 minutes faster than I ran the same distance a year ago. I felt strong the whole
run, and ran the return portion of the trip in less time than I did the outward portion, called a
"negative split". To train for this marathon, I am going to be using a format from Furman University
(called FIRST). It involves doing 3 good quality runs a week. Tempo runs, track runs and long
distance runs. Track work is my least favorite of all, but I can tell it is helping improve my pace after
just a few weeks... This past week, I did 4 x 800 repeats, with equal rest periods between each
repeat. I'll be building the number of repeats with each week.
My next challenge in this is fund raising. My goal is to raise the first $2,000 of my commitment by
August 1st. I have a long way to go.
"Saturday I ran 18 miles. Last week, I did 20 for my long run. Next week, it is back up to 20. I have
found in this super-hot weather that drinking 8-10 of my fuel-belt's bottles of water still leaves me 3
or so pounds lighter than I was when I left home before my run. Can't imagine how dehydrated I
would be without this extra fluid! My training fuel for this marathon is Sports Beans. I can't deal with
gu or gels, yuck. But the idea of getting to eat candy while I run is much more enjoyable.
Today, I ran a fast 5 miles. I ran this distance today 6 minutes faster than I was running 2 months
ago. I guess the FIRST program is working--I'm running less and I am running faster. Still, the
challenge in Tennessee in the summer time is the mornings when, before the sun rises, you step
out and it feels like a sauna. When you are dripping wet before you take that first step! Hopefully
that will make Ireland that much easier, because it can't possibly be 95 degrees with 95 % humidity
there in October (can it?)!
I am so close to my first goal, $2000 by 8/1. Just a little short. Every donation is still being matched
up to $1000 through 8/15, so now is the time to throw in your support. Even $5 becomes $10!
I also have some one helping to organize a benefit for Brown Dog for October 2nd. This is going to
be a lot of fun. Keep checking back for details, but think art and food and First Fridays. Save the
date now!"

I am running to help dogs and cats. Help me raise money and go to Ireland to run the Dublin
Marathon. To find out how, visit www.browndogfoundation.org/LChassy
From now until August 15th, the next $1000 in donations will be matched by a matching grant! Help
me hit this target!
My Marathon Training Update: I did some swimming today for cross training. Very good, love
the whole body workout!! Ran 15 on Saturday, about 10 seconds faster per mile than my goal.
We'll see how 20 works... My goal is to finish under 4 hours, 30 minutes, but, um, we'll see how that
goes. I've been a runner my whole life, but didn't run my first marathon until last year, when I was
39.

Announcement of Special Event in Knoxville, TN
Friday 10/2: Come to Ironwood Gallery in Knoxville, TN (119 Jennings St.) for
food, silent auction, music. Please cross-post. Every donor helps!
I'm running a marathon to save dogs & cats! You know that I love dogs
and cats... And, I love marathons... but, most importantly, I LOVE a
good challenge! That's why I've made the commitment to run 26.2
miles at the 30th Anniversary Dublin Ireland Marathon to raise money
and awareness for Brown Dog Foundation. Brown Dog was started by
a Nashville-woman after losing her 10 year old chocolate labrador
retriever to a very brief battle with Lymphosarcoma. Carol had
recently lost her job and learned that Chocolate Chip would require
nearly $5,000 in treatment to possibly survive. She was sent home on
a Friday afternoon to decide... "go into debt while I'm unemployed, or
let him go." Sadly, Chip's cancer was further progressed than they
realized at first, but luckily, she wasn't forced to make the difficult
decision between his life and her bank account. Chocolate Chip
crossed to Rainbow Bridge on Mother's Day, 2006. She created Brown
Dog Foundation so that no pet owner would have to make that decision
again. Together, Carol and I and four other strong women are
dedicating our physical and fundraising efforts to help take Brown Dog
Foundation to a national level. You can help us make that happen!
Please make a donation to my campaign... every dollar counts and will
help us make a difference in the life of a pet and his family.

Brown Dog Success Story Meet Gizmo...

Why I am so committed to Brown Dog... "As a
veterinarian working in a shelter in Tennessee, I know
first hand the impact that an unexpected pet care
expense can have on a family and a pet. Our pets
sometimes need help. Brown Dog Foundation is that
safety net for pets--and that, along with the economy,
there are more pets in need every day. I want to help
more pets stay where they belong, with the families
that love them. That's why I am running to support
Brown Dog Foundation. Help me help them!" Unless
someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is
going to get better. It's not. --Dr. Seuss

Gizmo's family experienced
downsizing at it's worst - both mom
and dad experienced layoffs in the
mortgage industry earlier this year.
Gizmo lost function in his back legs
and it was determined that he would
require an expensive back surgery
(approximately $4,500). Through
Brown Dog's network we found that
sometimes Acupuncture administered
by a Veterinary doctor can be an
alternative treatment. Gizmo's
situation qualified for Acupuncture
and thanks to Dr. Khalsa, Knoxville,
he is doing GREAT! Read more of
our success stories! We have
assisted 65 families so far!
